About Arie

Call me “Rie” in short, yes, “Ri”, in English, it sounds like “ree”, but if I didn’t hear you might want to call me “Arie”. I’m a Ruby Hobbyist.

I speak:

  1. Bahasa Indonesia (mother tounge)
  2. English (well, just near good I guess, I’m still learning how to think quickly in English, speak English reflexly and all full packed with full expressions),
  3. French (not bad, meaning a good friend of mine who is a French will say that, but if a French native speaker speaks to me I don’t think I can follow smoothly, I must get lost, I still need to practice my French more often, otherwise I’ll loose my foreign language reflex)
  4. Japanese (not bad, meaning I once only remembered 500 Kanji words then decreased because I didn’t use it, because I don’t really use it, I forgot many kotoba / japanese words). I started learning Japanese by myself since I was a 2nd grade student at Senior High School. Do not learn Japanese from anime, that’s not the right way to do it. Learn from books, video (dorama), cassette, go to Japan, learning by doing, practice it.
  5. Javanese (not bad err just say bad, because I can understand Javanese, but I just don’t feel like speaking javanese because my lips are not that “heavy” to say “DEE BEE”).
  6. Banjarese (bad, I was born in Samarinda / Capital City in East Kalimantan or Borneo island in Indonesia, Samarindanese people don’t use Banjarese as pure as people in South Kalimantan, we use Bahasa Indonesia intuitively mixed a bit with local accent, but since I often moved to other islands then my Bahasa Indonesia accent’s got twisted). Remember there are more than 350,000 tribes in Indonesia, that’s why we need Bahasa Indonesia to understand each other, Bahasa Indonesia is our second language.
  7. Kutainese (bad, I can hardly understand my families speaking in Kutainese).
  8. Bahasa Malaysia / Melayu (bad, I can only guess and 60% understand it, It’s hard to mimic malay because I don’t want to actually, so just use English because it’s used everywhere).
  9. Russian (super basic, I’m still learning, just for fun)
  10. German (super basic, I’m still learning, just for fun, fun fun fun)

Here is my frequency, I’ve summarised it on my blogdetik blog

The best way to contact me is via email. My primary email is ariekusumaatmaja aht googlemail dawt com.

I usually use my second email for mailing list and forum activities (ariekusumaatmaja2 aht googlemail dawt com).

I want to meet all nice people around the world, I feel like travelling around the world.

My first IM is Skype, my Skype ID is rubyninja. Always Invisible.

My second IM is YM, my ID is riyari3. Seldom online, if I’m online I’m invisible and I’m usually not there, meaning I fall asleep with my laptop that’s still on or simply away.

My third IM is GTalk, my GTalk ID is the same as my main email address : ariekusumaatmaja

My recommendation? Hm. Let’s just say it’s difficult for me to recommend because I’m super selective. I even seldom talk (even in my mother tounge language : Bahasa Indonesia). I’m usually just honest to say everything specifically if I recommend anyone that I know for jobs (for free). From all aspects, technically, non technical, attitude, etc.

Favourite cities? The cleaner and colder the better :-) I read from somewhere that Calgary is the cleanest city in the world. Well, my friend who’s been in Melbourne told me that Melb people are friendly and nice. I’m still in the process of searching my ideal city, probably a city in West Java island in Indonesia, probably Big Apple, or may be Bay Area.

arie with a nice guy and lovely computers

Communities? Well, generally I like nice communities, no bullshit, no intimidating, no scammers/trolls, I like hanging out coding/hacking together with friends. As long as it’s fun. I used to like going with _all_ guys, but then I realised that I just can’t hang out with lamers.

I like broadening network relationship with open minded techie guys and broad knowledge with business instinct by having meetup or just having parties together.

For any of you who already got my mobile number, please make an appointment via email first so that we’ll be ready to arrange our conversation. Do not hesitate to contact me! I shall give you my latest update as long as I’m connected to internet easily.

I wish all of my students were like you, Arie, so we can talk a lot about : LISP, SmallTalk, Postgres, Apple, etc. which is very rare in my univ since they are mostly WinTel (=Windows+Intel) people..

I am just wondering what will you be in my age now, 51, since at my age now I consider all of the programming things as “dirty job”.. ;-(

tridjoko

Hai :-) oo adiknya Bu Enny to… senang bisa bersua.

I guess I still shall be a plain guy at my 51 just like now (if I’m alive).

Arie,

Rasanya saya bersalah banget deh…Arie sering mampir ke blog ku, beri komentar, tapi begitu aku buka blogmu, bingung mau beri komentar.
Aku pikir diriku sendiri aja, tetapi adikku (http://triwahjono.wordpress.com) dan anakku berpendapat sama. Gpp ya…yang penting ditengoki kok, daripada komentar tapi ga nyambung.

Bu Edratna

Jangan khawatir, tenang aja, ngga pa pa lagi :-)

KaiToU

Sama-sama salam kenal.

Terima kasih :-)

Ueeeedaaaaann……
Sebelum saya masuk blog Arie ini, saya pikir saya dah ‘pinter banget’, bisa 4 bahasa, ternyata setelah dapet info ttg Arie dari temen kamu yg pernah share kamar kos (ooops keceplosan…heheh ), Arie bisa 8 bahasa PLUS this ‘world of ruby’….whew…….dumbfounded……

Numpang baca-baca ya, jadi pengen tau aja apa sih Ruby itu…..

Mach’s gut !

Evi

Bigets! Wish I know how to speak German so that we can practice :-) German is my next plan actually after mastering Russian, the more I told people that I’m still learning, the more they usually said: we also still learn. We never stop learning. But one thing I want to emphasize is the different level of what we achieve for sure, eh? That I’m still at a crawling baby level…

Salam kenal ya Evi :-) Danke.

RIE, Rie, Ri? Confused. Yes!
I came to your site the other day but hardly knew where I was. You see I am an “ancient” citizen of the world and did not grow up in the computer generations. I do not know if I can find this again. If not leave the description with Alex my friend who is trying his DAMNEDEST to learn english. I think he will. In fact he already has [learned english] he only needs to polish it a bit.

Ri, I am a political JUNKY and we are having our presidential election here in America. I am looking for information on who “Barrak Obama” is. He says he has never had another name. He even swore to that on his ABA (American Bar Association) he is a lawyer. However, he has a stepfather by the name of Lola Soetoro of Indonesia. His mother’s name (deceased) was an American named Ann Dunhamm. She married Lola Soetoro (I think also deceased) somewhere around 1966 +or -. Barrak Obama (American name) a/k/a Barry Soetoro, can you do a google search there and find his “Karty Tanda Pendudaks”? I am a democrat and he claims to be a democrat, but I think he is a phoney. He has some friends who were very bad people (Bill Ayers and his wife Bernadine Dohrn

harvey

Yes, you can call me, RIE, rie, Ri, whatever makes you easier to call me. Many non-Indonesian people also just call me Ari (yup, like European name without “E” at the last word)

Did you know Obama had spent his life in Jakarta Indonesia? ;-) There’s also an Indonesian group with so many members in Facebook that supports Obama you know…

Oh, about abudiyanto (alex), you gotta be his good and patient English teacher, ah :-)

no worries. you’re still much better than hopeless spammers, scammers, and other trolls (LOL)

Arie Kusuma Atmaja

@harvey,

Anyway, it’s not “Karty Tanda Pendudaks” to say Indonesian ID. It’s “Kartu Tanda Penduduk” or abbreviated as “KTP”

Okay, so I will call you REE, except short Re. The KTP, I copied from another site. I do not know Indonesian. Years ago I knew some Japanese, some Spanish ( actually, Mexican), some Okinawan (similar to Japanese), some Filipeno ( similar, I think to italian). But don’t ask me anything in those languages today because I never practiced them and now I can’t remember. Li yo? :). I never was in one place long enough to really learn very much of the languages. I liked all the different kinds of food though. I was never in Indonesia except for maybe Borneo and new Guinea and wasn’t there long enough to make it worth mentioning.
So you are all over Indonesia ? Computer programming? I know very little about computers. I have been in the oil industry most of my life, from Alaska (60 miles across the Bering Straight to Russia), to Florida (southern tip of USA), Drilling rigs, Pipeline construction, petrochemical plants, just name it , if it is oil field related then most likely I have been it . One company wanted to send me to Saudi Arabia as a drilling consultant years ago. But the region was so unstable I said no, I like living better than I like money. Besides when you come back into the states the tax on your earned money was too much. How did you come to get into working with computers? I would like to be able to send people animal images and/or nice pictures (not photos) that I come across on the internet. I like computers, for me they are a good past time and about all I can do with one is find interesting material to read and keep up with world affairs. Our news media in the states has gotten so one sided it is no good.
Ri if you want to read ordinary english and get a general idea how Americans talk GOOGLE “NO QUARTERS” and read the political comments. LOL! I should send that to Alex. You can post comments there. Mostly the people there do not like me, but that is okay, I understand that most all of them are younger than I and they are lacking in EXPERIENCE. LOL. The majority of them are women and they think their woman , Hillary Clinton, should have won the nomination for their party , but she didn’t. So now they are ready to fight and they are angry with men in general. Sounds like my wife haha, YES. That is why I was asking about Obama. I was curious if he is still an Indonesian citizen. Because if he is he would not be eligable to be president. He will not show his birth certificate because he was given another certificate when he was adopted by Lolo Soetoro of Jakarta Indonesia. Some thinks he is still and Indonesian citizen.
So what activities do you like? My favorites are gardening, fishing, EATING, and reading on this computer (the latter is the new past time). Also I like Theological Evolution. I mean I think there is a God that created the universe and all that is in it including LIFE, and I think He did it SCIENTIFICALLY. I think God scientifically begin the process of evolution that brought us to where we are today. OKAY I just wanted to say that and now I wont mention God anymore because I know God can be a tough arguement sometimes . LOL! BTW it started raining again and I am stuck inside again today. Where I live was once recognized on the maps as a rain forest. LATER.
Mexican for goodgye–ADIOS Amigo –goodbye friend– until later. :)

harvey

Okay, so I will call you REE, except short Re.

That’s also good :-) I like when my “blond” friends said: “Ah that’s easier for me to say” as long as it still sounds like my name.

The KTP, I copied from another site. I do not know Indonesian. Howaa, interesting! I was born in Borneo. East Borneo exactly.

I’ve been to almost all islands and provinces in Indonesia, except Bali, other than Makassar (Ujung Pandang) in Sulawesi island, all Sumatera island, and Irian.

I like living better *and* having much money ;-)

It all came from my hobbies to computer programming language. Heyya, you can use Flickr to share pictures.

I also have families that work in the oil industry. I got a cousin who work in Schlumberger in Balikpapan (East Kalimantan). I got an uncle who work in Pertamina (Perusahaan Minyak / or Indonesian Oil Company). And many others.

Ri if you want to read ordinary english and get a general idea how Americans talk GOOGLE “NO QUARTERS” and read the political comments. LOL! I should send that to Alex. You can post comments there. Interesting, mine also EATING :-)) I would love to learn gardening although I think my top hobby is having fun with computers with my like-minded friends (also with computers). LOL yup God can be a tough argument sometimes.

OK, Adios too, Take care!

arie—- ooops I meant Re

I am trying to learn some simple HTML codes. I have a couple of sites that have examples and explanations. Do you know a good site for HTML codes? I think you would know which are the better sites to learn from. I begin this once before but I keep getting side tracked and even more confused. It seems when I know just a small amount about a thing I am worse off than if I didn’t know anything at all. Will appreciate it if you can direct me to the most simple basic beginners site you know of. BTW I posted on alex site to both you and alex. Of course you know that because you subscribed to his site. But just so you know it was intended for both of you.

later friend

harvey

Let’s see, just let me know how simple and easy to follow links I give you below, feel free to trace deeper and deeper from there :-)) Have Fun!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Html Check also See Also and External links on that wikipedia page

You can get popular and hottest topic discussing about “learning html” on delicious

You can get the first ranking article about how to learn html fast

Remember to subscribe also to social networking sites we do, so we can keep in touch on those sites sharing many favourite things we like ;-)

Anyway, those sites contain many html codes and tags discussion, don’t you want to use a tool like Dreamweaver or any others to ease you? Well I know it’s bad to rely on those tools, but you can always learn by lurking html codes produced by a tool like Dreamweaver. If you’re interested in Programming Language, try to learn Ruby ;-) Let’s see how your progress would be, many more-than-40-year-old-people said that Ruby is very much like English. I have many friends who didn’t code ruby and even not a coder before (so yeah, a guy like you), like a graphic designer, can grasp ruby pretty quickly.

Alright, I guess that’s it, feel free to share your progress and sites with me :-))
